SIX WAYS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF HEPATITIS

The World Health Organization has declared July 28 World Hepatitis Day. According to the World Health Organization, Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused primarily by the hepatitis virus, although other infections and toxic substances may also cause hepatitis. The virus can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis ranging in severity. The virus is blood borne and can be caused by any exposure to infected blood such as unsafe medical care, unscreened blood transfusion and sexual practices that lead to blood exposure.

There are five main types of hepatitis virus; hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. These five types are characterized by severe illness, death, potential outbreaks and epidemic spread.

  • Hepatitis A & E are mostly caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water.
  • Hepatitis B, C and D are mostly caused as a result of contact with infected body fluids.

Senior citizens who have chronic liver diseases are at high risk of hepatitis. This is because chronic liver diseases may lead to liver damage making it difficult for the organ to fight against infections. Here are a few preventive measures we can take to reduce the risk of hepatitis:

  1. Use extra care when utilizing medical tools such as needles, injections and other sharp medical instruments that can pierce the body
  2. Be sure that al used medical tools and other sharp objects are safely disposed of after use.
  3. Practicing safe sex by using barrier methods such as condoms especially if you are active with multiple partners.
  4. Ensure that any donated blood you are receiving is extensively and specifically tested for the Hepatitis virus.
  5. Take care to ensure that you are getting proper treatment and care for your open cuts and wounds.
  6. If you haven’t already or if it has has been more than 10 years since your last vaccination, get vaccinated for hepatitis A and B. You can receive this vaccination at almost any pharmacy near you.

While there is currently no vaccines for hepatitis C, clinical trials are currently underway in the US. The preventive measures listed above however can be used to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.
