FIVE SELF-CARE PRACTICES THAT COULD HELP WITH BURN OUT

In today’s fast paced world, there is a negative culture that continues growing. Some call it “toxic productivity” – that phenomenon where we push our minds and bodies to unhealthy extremes in the name of being productive. A common outcome of toxic productivity is burn out.

Do you regularly turn down invitations, regularly work over 12 hours per day, neglect or forget medical appointments or joke about the 3 hours of sleep you had every night in a row for the entire week? Then you might be struggling with toxic productivity and may be at risk of burn out.

Now don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing inherently negative about being ambitious, productive and committed to your work, but when all these are constantly placed above your well-being, it becomes an issue. Here are four self-care tips you could incorporate into your daily lifestyle to help prevent burn out:

  1. Get active by exercising regularly:  there are many benefits to exercising your body for about 30 – 40 minutes, three to four times a week. One of these is that exercise helps to rejuvenate your mind and body by reducing stress levels and releasing hormones that help your body relax.
  2. Practice gratitude: sometimes we get lost in the things that are not going well in our lives and miss out on the things that are. Practicing gratitude allows you to appreciate yourself regardless of how you’re performing at work or whatever life challenges you may be facing.
  3. Prioritize sleep: missing out on hours of quality sleep is a major characteristic of the toxic productivity culture. Loss of sleep or insomnia is both a symptom of burn out and a cause of it. It is vicious cycle. It is important you get at least 7 hours of sleep daily, this allows your brain and body to reset, boosting memory and learning.
  4. Spend time with loved ones:  humans are social creatures who have a real need for social and emotional connection with others. It is therefore important that you are regularly taking out time to meet up with friends and family and engage in social activities.
  5. Regular practice solitude and rest: taking time to shut down and rest regularly is key to overcoming toxic productivity and preventing burn-out. When we make out time to rest and return to work to see that the world has not ended in our absence, we create margin in our life, do not feel over-extended and preserve our mental health. Another way to do this is with Yoga and you can click here to read our article on the practice of Yoga.

There are many other ways you can incorporate activities into your life daily tailored towards taking care and prioritizing yourself, the first and most important step is to get aware of the level of care you show yourself daily and make adjustments where needed.
